Carolyn Dick

Carolyn Faye Dick, 66, Liberty, Mo, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 6, 2011. Carolyn was born on Oct. 16, 1944, in Fresno, Calif. Her father Lyle Oldfield, mother Jannie Oldfield Hayes, and brother Larry Oldfield precede her in death.

Carolyn was originally diagnosed in December 2008 with a grade III anaplastic astrocytoma brain tumor and later developed a second tumor. She endured radiation and chemotherapy and battled those tumors for 28 months … and always with a smile on her face.

Carolyn is survived by her cherished husband of 51 years, Fred Dick, and their four children, Sherryl Gerke, Sharlene Wells, Deanna Majors, and Fred Aaron Dick. She is also survived by one brother, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Carolyn retired in 2003, after a 25-year career at Hallmark Cards as a selector and an export traffic specialist. She was often regarded there as a second mom to many of her colleagues. She loved spreading Christmas cheer by adorning her home and others’ with Hallmark ornaments. Carolyn enjoyed coordinating and cooking for get-togethers, holidays, birthdays, special occasions, and especially family time. She was a devoted member of Liberty United Methodist Church and made many lasting bonds and friendships. Carolyn enjoyed gardening, reading, working puzzles, and volunteering in the community and at church. She was a very caring and compassionate person, brightening any room with her smile. She also had a way of making everyone feel welcome in her home.

Carolyn taught us many life lessons through her battle with cancer. She taught us that being strong has nothing to do with lifting weights and everything to do with perseverance and faith. We have learned that it’s the small everyday things in life that really matter. We have learned that every single day, no matter how dark and dismal that day may seem, has something good to offer. She taught us that life is too short not to use the good dishes and the shiny silverware. Never save anything for a special occasion because every day is special. She taught us that God loves us because of who He is, not because of anything we did or didn’t do. We have learned that no matter how bad we may feel, we should get up, get dressed and put smiles on our faces. We have learned it is okay to get angry with God because He can take it. We have learned that life isn’t fair but it is still good. We have learned that it is okay for our children to see us cry. We have learned to take deep breaths … some days deeper than others. Carolyn taught us the value of finding a mate for life – one who is totally devoted; willing to be our rock and give us the strength we need to keep going, no matter what! We have learned thatlife is truly a gift and that we should never take it for granted. Carolyn taught us that no matter how many times we are asked who the president is or what year it is, that we should really just focus on who we are today, what today is about, what we will do today. She taught us how to truly live in the moment! And most recently, Carolyn taught us how to pass through life with bravery, dignity, and grace. We will forever be changed because of the life lessons Carolyn taught us and she will forever be in our hearts.
