Lisa Anne Barth

Lisa Anne Barth passed from earth to heaven June 10, 2008, after a courageous 17-month battle with a glioblastoma brain tumor. She faced each day with bravery, dignity, grace and a sense of humor.

Her strength of character, servant’s heart, and unconditional love for others exemplified her faith and impacted all with whom she came in contact. All her energy throughout the illness was spent fighting the battle, living life and loving her family.

She is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 23 years, Kevin Barth, and their three children, Alex, John, and Charlotte. She is also survived by parents Don and Sandy Peterson; three siblings, David Peterson, Scott Peterson and Lyn Rantz; and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Lisa was born March 18, 1961, in Maryville, MO.  She spent her childhood in Lamoni, IA, and received a nursing degree in 1983 from Graceland University. After graduating she began her career at Menorah Medical Center. She returned to Children’s Mercy where she had worked in college and remained there 23 years. During this time she served as a nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit.

In 1993, after completing a Masters at the University of Kansas, she became one of the first clinical nurse specialists in cardiac surgery where she worked until 2007. In her role she touched the lives of hundreds of children and their families with incredible skill and compassion. She faithfully served as colleague, mentor, role model and friend to countless nurses, physicians and psychosocial and allied health professionals. Lisa’s philosophy was not simply to treat children’s medical needs, but to shower entire families with love, care and compassion.

Lisa approached life with great passion and humility, while investing in the true treasures of life. Her greatest achievement and highest calling was being a mother to her three children. Her favorite family memories included spring visits to The Berry Patch, trips through the corn maze in the fall, skiing and hiking in Colorado and summertime at Table Rock Lake.

Lisa’s proud Iowa roots defined her love for the beauty of the outdoors and the simple things in life. She was equally comfortable building a bonfire as she was attending a black-tie event. Lisa was an avid gardener and reader. She also loved to cook and welcomed all into her home with gracious hospitality. Her contagious laughter, even in the midst of struggle, signified her ability to live life to the fullest.
