Sue Hruska

Susan Maree Hruska left this earth on July 11, 2010, after a four-year battle with brain cancer.

Sue was 48 years old, living in Rochester, Minn., with her husband of 25 years, when the doctors discovered that she had Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme Brain Cancer. During her four-and-a-half-year battle with the disease, she fought through three brain surgeries, clinical trials, radiation, and many rounds of chemotherapy. She was lucky enough to be able to be treated at the Mayo Clinic, where she had worked for nearly 30 years. There the doctors, nurses and other staff treated her with amazing care, and gave her an extraordinary quality of life during her short time left on earth.

Sue had a positive outlook and energy that was contagious. Despite a terminal diagnosis, she had the incredible ability to look past all of the negative and see God’s plan for her. She had a caring for others and selflessness that was remarkable. When told how inspiring she was, Sue’s reply (via her blog) was: “I have been told time and time again how brave I am. I need to say, I have a nephew in Iraq. He and the thousands of others serving our country are the brave ones. Because of them I am able to come home to the comforts of my home to fight my fight.”

Sue’s legacy is carried on by her family - her husband, Ed and son Drew (and daughter-in-law Keeley) in Rochester, Minn., and daughter, Holly (son-in-law Steve) in Olathe, Kans. But, as anyone who has ever met Sue will tell you, anyone who met her – even just once – carries with them a little piece of her inspiration.

Sue hoped that by facing her challenges, she would inspire others to appreciate life and live it to the fullest. After the first recurrence of the cancer, she posted on her blog: “I was told once 'Those with cancer count their blessings, those without it count their problems.' I don't necessary think that is true, but if it is for you, count your blessings every day, praise the Lord in the good times, praise the Lord in the difficult times. He is my Lord and Savior and will be with me always. He gives me strength and grace to meet each day.”

Sue Hruska went to her Lord and Savior with open arms. She is missed dearly, but all who know her find comfort in knowing that she is Home.
