Blazing Good Time at
Head for the Cure at the K!
Hundreds of Head for the Cure supporters and run/walk team members braved the soaring temperatures and had a great time cheering on the Royals at this year’s Head for the Cure at the K! on Saturday, July 17, 2010.
The special Head for the Cure headband/wristbands giveaway certainly came in handy as the temperatures neared 100 degrees (107+ Heat Index!) at Kauffman Stadium.
Head for the Cure was featured prominently in front of nearly 20,000 fans at the game, including a video that aired on Royals giant CrownVision high definition scoreboard.
Two Head for the Cure Team Captains received special recognition at the game. Leah Israel, who leads “Jerry’s Team” in honor of her father, threw out the first pitch (courtesy of Hy-Vee, where Jerry Israel was employed). Phil Gronniger, who leads “Team Guy Gronniger” in honor of his uncle, was awarded the Buck O’Neil Legacy Seat for bringing the largest group to the game.
Special thanks to all who attended the 2nd Annual Head for the Cure at the K!
Foundation President Offers Heartfelt Thanks
Dear Head for the Cure Supporter,
Thanks to you, the 7th Annual Head for the Cure 5k Run & Walk was by far the best yet, with a record number of runners and walkers — more than 3,500 — and more than 4,000 overall, including participants, volunteers, sponsors and supporters.
Additionally, there was a dramatic increase in the number of teams, with nearly 70 extraordinary groups participating in hope and solidarity for a family member, friend or coworker currently enduring brain cancer, or in memory of a loved one.
Also, let's not forget about our introduction of the Head for the Cure 5k event in Lawrence where 300 ran or walked.
Five very special individuals were recognized as 2009 Head for the Cure Keeping the Faith award recipients — Keith Boxler, Matt Mendlick, Amy Roberts, Dick Wilson and Danny Weaver. Please read their remarkable stories.
The Head for the Cure Foundation offers sincere thanks to each and every person who helped make the seventh installment of our signature event so successful. More than $225,000 has been raised through the 2009 Head for the Cure events and awareness about the need for brain cancer research has grown exponentially.
Thanks to the support of thousands of caring individuals, the hard work of hundreds of volunteers and the generous contributions of dedicated sponsors, we are defeating brain cancer step by step!

2009 Head for the Cure 5k Events
For the first time in the six-year history of the Head for the Cure Foundation, two 5k Run & Walk events occurred.
The original, the Metro KC Head for the Cure 5k, celebrated its 7th anniversary August 30 drawing a record 3,500 runners and walkers, a 46 percent increase over the '08 5k. Two weeks later, the popular event was introduced in Lawrence. The inaugural Lawrence 5k attracted 300 runners and walkers.
The record turnout at the signature KC 5k helped the Head for the Cure Foundation generate more than $225,000 in 2009 for the Chris Anthony Brain Tumor Research Fund. More than 70 teams participated with five teams having 120 or more members. Leading the top 10 was Lisa's Legacy with 192 team members.
The first Lawrence 5k Run & Walk was highlighted by 77-year-old Dick Wilson, a former University of Kansas track and cross country star who finished the 5k at 38:39.3. More interesting is that Wilson is undergoing treatments for a brain tumor. He was honored with a '09 Keeping the Faith award from the Head for the Cure Foundation.
Complete results of both 5k Run & Walk events are available at Metro KC HFTC 5k or Lawrence HFTC 5k.
Head for Your Closet Turns VML into Boutique
Employees of VML, a Kansas City-based marketing and advertising agency, recently searched their home closets and storage bins and found thousands of pieces of men's and women's clothing, shoes, hats, handbags and various accessory items for the inaugural Head for Your Closet, the latest Head for the Cure Foundation fundraising activity.
For a few days, the Head for Your Closet items consumed several areas at the agency's downtown location. Creative signage was everywhere. Mannequins were positioned to display several outfits and to promote the sale. Clothing racks were filled. A boutique was built.
The Head for Your Closet boutique was open to the VML staff. All items were priced at $1 and nearly $600 was raised. Thousands of unsold items were donated to the Don Bosco Family Support Center.
Thanks to Nicole Conrick, Beth Crabb and the VML media team for the Head for Your Closet idea and a special thanks to Nate Hofer for developing the promotional signage.
The First Head for the K! Deemed a Success.
The Head for the Cure Foundation partnered with the Kansas City Royals and the Dick Howser Scholarship Program at Saint Luke's College of Nursing for a special group night July 18 at Kauffman Stadium.
The Head for the K! package included a game ticket, Head for the Cure blue wristbands and a headband, and a donation of at least $5 to the Head for the Cure Foundation and the Dick Howser Scholarship Program.
Packets of wristbands and the headband inclusive of a registration form for the the August 30 Head for 5k Run & Walk were also sold at the Head for the Cure display tent in the new Outfield Experience area. The event generated significant donations and extensive promotion of the Kansas City Head for the Cure 5k.
Head for the Art a Huge Hit!
More than 50 contributing artists participated in the 3rd Head for the Art at the Hilliard Gallery in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District. Hundreds of art enthusiasts and Head for the Cure volunteers attended the festive May event.
Thanks to the generous contributions of the artists and strong auction sales, this year’s Head for the Art was the most successful to date.
