Thomas Trabon

Thomas Holmes Trabon, Leawood, Kan., passed peacefully February 7, 2016. Tom was surrounded by family and friends as his long battle with cancer came to an end. There will be a Celebration of Tom's life at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Church of the Resurrection Wesley Chapel, 13720 Roe Ave., Leawood. The service will be preceded by visitation at 1:30 p.m. Private family burial. Memorial contributions can be made to "Headforthecure.org" Tom was born Jan. 28, 1950, to James and Virginia Trabon. He graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1968. He went on to graduate from the University of Kansas earning a Bachelor of Science in Business and accounting. Tom was a man of many accomplishments both personally and professionally. Tom had over 40 years of CPA experience involved in the real estate, hotel and historic properties areas. He began his career with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and went on to be the lead tax partner in the Kansas City office (1977-1988) and the Philadelphia office of Laventhol and Horwath (1989-1990). Tom founded his own firm in 1991 and while he continued to specialize in real estate work, he also became an owner developer of many downtown real estate projects. Tom's civic commitment to the City of Kansas City was tremendous. He was instrumental in founding the Downtown Community Improvement district, River Market Community Improvement District and served on a list of committees including the Downtown Development Authority, Historic Kansas City Foundation, Economic Development Corp. and many others. Tom served as Chairman of both the Downtown Council and the Kansas City Streetcar Authority, which he considered one of his crowning achievements. Tom was a highly respected by anyone and everyone who cared about the revitalization of Downtown Kansas City. Tom was a kind, caring and patient man which made him a good teacher to all those who worked for and with him. Tom was an avid outdoorsman. He loved snow skiing, golfing, scuba diving, and fishing. He was a huge KU basketball fan and together with his wife went to many games and made many trips to the NCAA tournament. Tom was such a big KU fan he even went to football games. He was a generous, devoted and caring Dad who loved traveling with his family on skiing, diving, and other exotic trips. He truly enjoyed teaching all his children to enjoy the activities that he did. Tom was a wine enthusiast and served as the Chairman of the wine committee at Indian Hills Country Club. He and his wife and family made many trips to wine country to taste and build his cellar. Tom loved to travel and he and Diane took many trips and saw 25 countries throughout the world. Tom was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Diane and four children, Courtney, Tyler, Kaylie and Ellie and his sister, Nancy Pollock as well as many, many friends. Tom would wish us all to celebrate life as fully as he did.
